This is why people hate the media

Sometimes I think I am studying in the wrong field. So many journalists are absolute monsters--they really have ceased to be human beings. Look at the following story. You don't even need to read the whole thing, just the headline, the lede, and the bit I've italicized for emphasis.

Missing 3-Year-Old Boy Found Dead in Montana

Saturday, January 27, 2007

KALISPELL, Mont. — The remains of a 3-year-old boy who disappeared outside a home in nearby Evergreen were discovered late Friday, Flathead County Sheriff Mike Meehan said Saturday.

Meehan declined to release further details surrounding the death of Loic J.M. Rogers. A press conference was scheduled Saturday afternoon.

A message left at a listing for the boy's parents, Mark and Ariel Rogers, was not immediately returned.

So here we have an unnamed reporter or reporters with the gall to telephone the parents of a toddler found dead only hours before, and actually expect them to call back? These people have been frantically searching for their baby for the past several days, have only recently learned that their worst nightmares have come true, and some asshat from the Associated Press has the audacity to call them up looking for a juicy quote?

Inhuman.

Emily post needs to publish Etticate for Journalists so at least we have a reference book to say, "See. This is totally inappropriate. Emily Post said so."

Lousy Headline of the Day

Dead Woman Raises Alarm at Local Middle School

Really brings to mind some powerful images. I think a simple "Body Found at Local School"-type header would suffice, as dead people are notorious for not being able to do things like raise alarms.

Incidentally, I was just at that school a few weeks ago, for three days in a row, judging History Fair projects. (I know--my coolness cred just keeps going up and up.)

Wow. That headline made me think a dead woman did something like pull the fire alarm.

That would be freaky.

I like the section of the story that talks about what the students say when they heard the news. Can you imagine having to tell a bunch of junior high students there was a dead body in the school?? I think I just wouldn't have told them. I'm surprised they didn't riot!

Fun with Fonts!

As some dumbass once said in "song," Hey ya! It's been a while. I miss you all. At the moment, I am preparing a lecture for the first (and hopefully last) class I will ever teach--an Advanced Editing class on Typeface. It's exactly as much fun as you might think.

However, I did stumble across something really, genuinely awesome as I did it, and I just had to jump over here and share it with you.

Welcome to Bembo's Zoo.
